I've been making sugar cookies with royal icing for half a year now. So, it felt like it was time to try the next step with decorating them. Bring on (drum roll please) fondant! I was so nervous at first but it is stupid easy to make. Granted, I still need some work on it, but compared to royal icing I don't think it will take too long to perfect.
Marshmallow fondant is made with 3 simple ingredients: marshmallows, water, and powdered sugar. (8 ounces of Marshmallows, 2 tbsp of water, and 4 cups of powdered sugar) You add the marshmallows and water into a microwave safe bowl and put it in the microwave for one minute. You mix it until it is smooth. You slowly add in the powdered sugar one cup at a time until you cannot mix it in the bowl anymore. Finally, you kneed it like dough with your hands until it is a firm ball and not sticky anymore. You should kneed it on a cutting board with some powdered sugar on it so it doesn't stick (it is very sticky until you get enough powdered sugar mixed in!) And, there you go! You have created the fondant.

The next step is to add food coloring if you choose. You flatten the ball and put a few drops of food coloring into it and then fold the fondant on top of where the drops are and kneed it till it is a solid color. Lastly, you roll it flat and create your shapes. I still need to get a drying mold and next time make the shapes thinner, but my first attempt was a good start!

This was the perfect snow day activity for me to do with the kids. Not pictured are the sugar cookies that my son Logan made and the fondant snowflakes he created. He had so much fun! It fills my heart with joy that he has a love for baking at 2 years old.

It was a happy snow day in the Storm house! If you were impacted by the nor'easter as well, I hope you made the best of it and enjoyed your day!
